well damn.
During the 2024 Emmys, when John Oliver gave his acceptance speech when “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” received the award for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, the comedian talked about his deceased dog.
His schedule was interrupted by the playoff music, and Emmys producers have apologized for that.
“We had absolutely no idea that the dog he was talking about was dead,” executive producer Dion Harmon said. told the Hollywood Reporter On Monday.
“If you look back, you'll realise we turned the music off as soon as he said the dog had passed. We didn't even realise!”
After an hilariously clumsy speech in which Oliver, 47, accidentally referred to his son Hudson as “husband” and joked, “Oh, this is going to bother me!” the TV host added, “I also want to thank — this is going to be so silly — our dog. We had the most amazing dog. She was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us through two pregnancies.”
Oliver and his wife, former U.S. Army medic Kate Norley, 46, married in 2011. The couple has two sons: Hudson, 9, and a second son, 6, whose name they have not released.
During the comedian's speech, when Oliver was talking about his late beloved family pet, the playoff music stopped and he had to leave the stage.
“Perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to that,” he remarked, and then jokingly cursed the Emmy producers.
“Fuck, I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now,” he said, referring to the famous ASPCA commercials.
“He was an amazing dog. Ouch,” she continued, as the music got louder.
“It's not just for her – it's for all the dogs. You're all such good girls. You're all such good boys. You all deserve a treat,” Oliver said.
He ended the conversation by saying, “Take me out of the game now!”
“We've had some funny moments with John in the past,” Harmon said, recalling the Emmy Awards moment.
“We didn't know what direction he was going to go, but he seemed like a good player. We never want to fool people.”
