A former pro football player’s plot to launder $1.2 million in marijuana profits three years ago backfired when he discovered the bags filled with stolen cash were too heavy to carry — so he dumped them in the Colorado forests and Ran away.
But Devin Aguilar — a former college standout who briefly played for the Tennessee Titans more than a decade ago — made another big mistake during a previously unreported December 2021 robbery: He reached into the money bag. Arapahoe County authorities extracted the 35-year-old man’s DNA from the black and blue gloves, then matched it to Aguilar, who was already in the system for theft.
And so Aguilar, once a star wide receiver for the University of Washington Huskies, found himself in the Arapahoe County Jail for nearly a year — and he was released just last month, CBS reported.
Police investigators say his cash-grabbing plot – which was recorded by at least six surveillance cameras – was something out of Hollywood.
“It was completely organized. He knew exactly what he was doing,” Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Investigations Sgt. Brett Cohn told the news station. “Every square inch of his body was covered, and black.”
But that doesn’t mean it was the perfect crime, the officer said.
In fact, it was an inside job – Aguilar was dating Fon Hua, a 54-year-old teller at a cash transportation service, whom he planned to eliminate.
Hua told investigators that she did not know her gridiron boyfriend planned to rob the place, but police later found plans and drawings on his phone detailing Aguilar’s plans, and said Hua Had used his phone to record the firms business in order to help him.
Day of the crime – December 1, 2021 – A rookie athlete dressed in head-to-toe black pulled out his pistol and pounced on a transport van driver who was driving $1,224,785 in marijuana to a company garage. Businesses throughout the state, CBS said.
The driver had no idea she was being followed when she pulled into the holding facility — until Aguilar approached her.
He forced her out of the van, then held her at gunpoint as she filled large garbage bags with cash.
The work was completed within a few minutes. The former professional slung the bag over his shoulder like Santa Claus and headed out the overhead garage door.
“They planned it out for six months – they even knew when the most money was going to come in,” Cohn said.
But there was a problem, Cohn said. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound former wide receiver couldn’t take that much money.
“It was very overwhelming for him,” Cohn said. “They didn’t calculate the weight.”
The driver called 911, and Arapahoe County deputies eventually found two bags full of money under a tree near seven football fields from where Aguilar had taken them.
But although the staggered criminal ran away, he left behind his gloves – which later helped police catch him.
“Extremely stupid,” Cohn said. “You can plan carefully for six months, but clearly mistakes were made.”
Aguilar’s partner-in-crime eventually turned on him during the investigation.
“You left your gloves on, idiot,” Huya said in a recorded phone call during police interrogation.
“But how will they know it’s me?” Aguilar asked, unaware that the police were sitting across from him.
According to CBS reporting, Huia – who eventually admitted his role in the scheme – took a plea deal, admitted armed robbery and was sentenced to six months in jail and probation.
Meanwhile, Aguilar also took a deal that saw him plead guilty to aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery.
Prosecutors asked Judge Joseph Whitfield to jail him for 15 to 20 years – but the judge only jailed him for a year.
In the end, the gun-wielding thief spent less than seven months behind bars.
Both the police and the businesses they looted were disgusting.
“We believe the suspect did not deserve this and we also do not believe the victims received the justice they deserved,” Cohn said.
A representative of the transport business echoed his comments and said they were “disappointed, but not surprised” that a “soft on crime” judge handed down such a weak sentence.
“We still trust our justice system and hope that justice will be just and fair for all parties concerned… but I think that hope is fading.”
The driver said she has suffered panic attacks and paranoia since the bone-chilling incident, and is now receiving therapy for anxiety.
Meanwhile, Aguilar – who played at least one preseason NFL game before opting out of the league – claimed he wants a second chance.
“I’m taking full accountability,” he told the judge.
He added, “I used to be ashamed, but now I’m not ashamed of taking accountability.” “I’m ready for another opportunity.”
