A grandfather preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family and friends in Florida was shot and killed by his neighbor inside a gated community after the two argued over loud music.
Hyrulean McLean, 72, was shot just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Somerset Drive Apartments in Lauderdale Lakes, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
McLean went down to talk to the suspected shooter, who lives in the unit below his apartment, after the man reportedly complained about Grandpa’s music being too loud.
Police said an argument broke out and the unidentified suspect pulled out a gun and fired the fatal shots.
“He was playing his music, and the guy said he was playing it too loud,” said McLean’s wife, Rose. told NBC South Florida. “So my husband, he went to her.”
The grieving wife said she was unaware that her husband had gone down, but when she heard a single gunshot she knew something was wrong.
“I heard the gunshot, ‘boom,’ and I flew toward the door. I see my husband lying face down in a pool of blood,” she says told WSVN.
Rose McLean claimed that the alleged killer showed no remorse for the shooting and threatened to kill her if she did not stop talking.
“He was not sorry. He was just standing there looking at me like that with a gun in his hand,” she told the outlet. “And I went up to him and said, ‘Why did you shoot my husband? Why?’ And he said to me, ‘If I don’t shut my mouth, he’ll shoot me too.’
McLean, a private bus driver, was the father of two sons and a grandfather.
“Wherever he is, I am always with him. We are together like a team. Carrying her like that, trust me, it’s very hard,” Rose said.
McLean’s pastor, Tracy McCloud, led a prayer vigil outside the apartment with the victim’s family and friends as they waited for information from police about what led to the shooting.
“It’s crazy how the human race has come to a place where we don’t respect life the way we should,” McCloud told the outlet. “Who would have thought that something so tragic would happen?”
Lauderdale Lake is located 32 miles north of downtown Miami.
The suspected shooter remained at the scene and cooperated when police detained and interrogated him.
Police said he claimed self-defense in the shooting.
Officials said the case will be turned over to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed following an investigation.
