A helicopter crashed into a radio tower in Houston on Sunday night, killing four people, including a child, officials said.
The privately owned R44 helicopter crashed in Houston’s Second Ward just before 8 p.m. Video shows massive fire spreading about 600 feet to the ground.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, but police confirmed that one of the four killed was a child, without specifying ages. All four were aboard the helicopter, no injuries were reported on the ground.
Houston City Council member Mario Castillo said the helicopter was “a private touring helicopter.” Said on X.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash.
“This is a tragic event tonight, this is a tragic loss of life,” Whitmire said Sunday night.
The helicopter had taken off from Ellington Field, about 15 minutes from where it crashed, officials said. It is not clear at the moment where the plane was going.
The crash is being investigated by local authorities, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
