They say marriages are made in heaven, but for some cricketers — love was destined to bloom on the very field they hit centuries at. Take Jasprit Bumrah, who led India to a resounding victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, and was recently named ‘Player of the Tournament’.
The first time the 30-year-old cricketer met sports anchor Sanjana Ganesan, the woman he would later marry and build a family with, was when she was interviewing him after a Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings match in the 2013-2014 IPL season. Or when Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, who was a part of the team that won the World Cup in 2007 and 2015, met and fell in love with Lee Furlong, an enigmatic anchor at Fox Sports.
We’ve all heard of (and swooned over) the cricketer-actor pairing — Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, K L Rahul and Athiya Shetty — but the cricketer-anchor combination is just as special, especially considering that both these professions revolve largely on the outcome of a match that one-half of the couple just played.
From Jasprit Bumrah to Shane Watson, 5 cricketers who married sports anchors
1. Jasprit Bumrah and Sanjana Ganesan
The video of Jasprit Bumrah being interviewed by Sanjana Ganesan post the India vs Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup 2024, and then after the India vs South Africa finals, have won the internet, with both cricket and non-cricket fans lauding them as couple goals; a pair who manage to balance the personal and professional. The duo first met back in 2013, but only got close in 2019, post their (strictly professional) interaction during the 2019 World Cup. This was followed by a couple of dates, which then blossomed into a full-blown relationship and culminated in an intimate wedding in Goa in 2021. Bumrah and Ganesan, who live in an apartment in Ahmedabad, have since welcomed their son Angad.
