A grandmother on holiday was left stunned after she was almost arrested for refusing to pay for a tuna sandwich sent back during an international flight earlier this month.
When Lily Ifield ordered an $11 breakfast on a Jet2 flight from London to Turkey on November 3, she described it all as “soggy,” “cold” and inedible. he said to the sunShe said when it came time to pay he refused.
Once the low-cost airline plane landed in Bodrum – a city in the south-west part of Turkey – four officers armed with guns and batons stood near the plane to escort the 79-year-old grandmother off the plane.
The cabin crew was reportedly fed up with her refusal to pay for the sandwiches, even though she claimed she had already paid about $63 for four small bottles of wine, which she gave to her daughter. To deal with his anxiety.
“We didn’t know what we had done. I was turning to people and saying, ‘I think I’ve been arrested because of a sandwich,'” Ifield said.
According to Ifield, the manager allegedly told the British resident to “shut up” and be quiet, but she backed off, saying “sorry, I can talk as much as I want”. We were being treated like criminals over a child [sandwich],
When the women were greeted by armed police in a foreign country, they were “shaking” and initially had no idea that the police response was to fish sandwiches.
Ifield’s daughter suggested that perhaps he was being arrested because someone had put drugs in his luggage, she told the Sun.
To further add to the confusion, airport police reportedly forced Ifield to walk “a mile” through the airport. The trip was upsetting for the elderly woman, who claimed she needed a new knee and used a walking stick. When he tried to find out where they were going, the officers reportedly said, “No one speaks English, no one speaks English.”
Even his daughter was surprised at how the matter escalated to such an extent.
“My daughter said, ‘Look, my mom just sent a sandwich — what’s all this?'” Ifield said.
Eventually, when officials realized that the drama was over an unpaid sandwich, they decided to move forward with the entire process.
“It only ended when they suddenly realized how stupid the argument they were being called out on was and we were told to ‘just go away.’ They were obviously very embarrassed,” Ifield said.
The New York Post has contacted Jet2 for comment.
Ifield said the experience ruined his vacation.
“We were so upset that we stayed in our room for four days. We felt sick with anxiety. This ruined our vacation. On top of a flipping tuna sandwich. Nobody would have eaten that,” Ifield said.
