Can you believe it’s been almost 7 years since the last version of HDMI came out? HDMI 2.1 Was released on November 28, 2017 and has not had any major updates since then. It’s been quite a long time, and things have improved a lot in terms of cables and standards over this period. But we may see a new HDMI 2.2 standard introduced next year.
According to an email sent to Engadget From the HDMI forums, a new HDMI specification will be announced on January 6, a day before CES 2025 begins. There aren’t many details about what this new HDMI might bring.
The only information provided is that this next-generation standard “enables higher resolutions and a wider range of refresh rates and will be supported with a new HDMI cable”.
As mentioned above, it’s been 7 years since we’ve seen any major changes to HDMI cables. Now it is not at all clear whether this will be the release of the HDMI 2.2 standard or not. Or it will be a minor update like HDMI 2.1b which was released just last year. The last version added support for 10K resolution and higher bandwidth up to 48Gbps. There is very little information on this subject. So, we have to wait till January 6 for the final release.
HDMI may not get as much attention as other cable standards, but it plays a vital role in the modern world in providing us with the entertainment we enjoy so much. This has made connecting between devices much easier than the AV cables we used to have.
