A New York man is accused of murdering his wealthy financier father at a celebrity-favourite five-star hotel in Ireland – because his father had gone there to help him deal with a mental health crisis.
Henry McGowan, 30, of Brooklyn, appeared at Portlaoise District Court on Thursday morning to face charges in connection with the death of his father John McGowan. BBC reported,
The elder McGowan, aged 60, was found unconscious in a leisure area of the Ballyfin Demesne, an exclusive luxury hotel in Ballyfin, County Laois, about 65 miles south-east of Dublin, on Tuesday night. According to RTÉ News,
Sources told The Post that Henry was traveling to Europe on an aimless trip that turned into a mental health crisis.
John traveled to Ireland to rescue his troubled son and get him treatment – something he had done before.
Sources said the caring father arrived in Ireland on Tuesday, hours before his death.
Henry McGowan’s defense lawyer Barry Fitzgerald said his client had significant mental health issues and requested that he undergo a psychiatric evaluation in prison, the BBC reports.
Just last year, Henry McGowan was praised for running the New York City Marathon as part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
“If you’re struggling, ask for help or if someone around you is struggling with mental illness, offer help.” He told ABC 7 New York at the time,
He said, “The organization is so great because it’s not only targeted at individuals with mental illness, but really it’s about the individuals’ family and empowering them and educating them to help that person. “
Judge Andrew Cody remanded McGowan in custody at Cloverhill Prison and adjourned the case until November 18.
Police said investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Ballyfin Demesne is one of Ireland’s most exclusive retreats, with past celebrity guests including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who stayed there during their honeymoon in 2014. ABC News noted,
