The head coach of the Indian cricket team is a prestigious post due to the sport’s immense popularity in India. In the past, India did not have a full-time cricket coach, but instead had a manager, who doubled up as the coach. In 1971, Keki Tarapore took on this role and is widely recognized as India’s first coach.
It was not until 1992 that the Indian cricket team established distinct roles for a coach and a manager. Over the years, India has had many coaches. The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, assumed the position in 2021, succeeding Ravi Shastri, and became the 27th head coach of the team.
Rahul Dravid’s income as Indian Cricket Team’s head coach
The head coach’s role is equally vital as the captain’s, involving numerous responsibilities. The huge salary commanded by a head coach reflects his importance to the team. The BCCI maintains flexibility regarding the salary of the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team. The salary is negotiable and is determined based on the coach’s level of experience and expertise.
According to DNA and Sportskeeda, Rahul Dravid, who had a prolific career as a batsman for India, earns around Rs 12 crore annually as the coach of the Indian Cricket Team.
Dravid’s tenure was originally set to conclude after the ODI World Cup 2023. However, it was extended until June to oversee preparations for the on-going T20 World Cup 2024. Recently, he confirmed that he will not be reapplying for the role.
According to various online reports, Gautam Gambhir, who recently mentored Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title, is reported to be the frontrunner to succeed Dravid. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has also expressed interest in the prestigious position. The new Head Coach of Team India will be based in Mumbai for 3.5 years, from July 1, 2024 to December 31st, 2027.
