On Tuesday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah officially announced former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian Men’s Cricket Team. Gambhir takes over from Rahul Dravid, who took on the role of the head coach in November 2021. Gambhir’s first assignment as coach will be a limited-overs series against Sri Lanka which begins on July 27. The away series will comprise three ODIs and three T20Is.
Under Gambhir’s guidance, India is set to participate in five ICC tournaments over a span of three years. Their ICC campaign begins with the Champions Trophy in 2025, followed by the World Test Championship final later that year, provided India qualifies. Subsequently, India will compete in the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the ODI World Cup in 2027, with another potential World Test Championship final in the same year.
Here’s how much salary and daily allowance Gautam Gambhir will receive as the new head coach of Team India
Reports suggest that Gambhir’s appointment as head coach was delayed due to salary negotiations. While the exact salary has not been confirmed, most news outlets have reported that Gambhir’s pay will be the same or slightly higher than what Dravid received. “The day Ravi (Shastri) joined, he didn’t even have a contract and things worked out. In the case of Gautam also, some finer details are being worked out. The salary will be in the same range of Rahul Dravid,” a BCCI source told PTI.
In that case, Gambhir’s salary is expected to be around Rs 12 crore annually, similar to what Dravid was paid, according to Times Now.
This huge annual salary is not the only benefit Gambhir will enjoy as head coach of a cricket team run by the world’s richest cricket board. The coveted position also includes perks such as a daily allowance of Rs 21,000 during tours, according to the Economic Times. Additionally, the head coach travels business class with the team and is provided top-tier accommodation.
