He did the math.
Sheriffs in Wisconsin sprang into action Friday night when a 10-year-old boy called 911 with an epic educational emergency: math homework.
The confused child was struggling with his exercise problems, and when his family members also found themselves troubled, the boy turned to law enforcement for help, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office reports.
“He said, ‘Ma’am, I know I shouldn’t call 911 for this, but I could really use some help with my homework,'” Dispatcher Kim Cross. told ABC 2,
Cross, who was not trained in decimals, was unable to assist over the phone, but a deputy was dispatched to the boy’s home to help solve the math mystery.
Deputy Chase Mason wrote in his after-action report, “Personally, I am also not very skilled when it comes to math, but nevertheless, I responded to the call for assistance.”
“With the help of Deputy Mason, they were able to work together and solve math problems involving decimals,” The sheriff’s office said in a statement on Facebook,
After completing the task with the help of law enforcement, they received a warning to only call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.
“When he goes to school and all the students see it they think it’s great,” the deputy told ABC 2.
“Hopefully next time they won’t all call me for help with math.”
Shawano is a county of about 40,000 residents just outside Green Bay.
County Sheriff George Lenzner told ABC 2 they were only able to respond to the unusual SOS because it was a slow evening, but his officers are known for helping people with smaller crises like shoveling snow and replacing mailboxes.
“A great teaching moment for everyone. Deputy Mason, thank you for taking time out of your day to be this young man’s friend! The office wrote.
