The highest-paid NYPD employee made more than $400,000 last year doing administrative work — more than half of which came from staggering overtime pay, The Post has learned.

The staggering overtime amount alone — which is the most paid by the department in at least a decade, according to NYC Open Data — would be enough to cover the salaries of three new NYPD officers. With a department starting salary of $58,580.,

Epps’s increased total compensation also boosted her boss’s earnings by more than $111,400. Maddrey, the top uniformed cop, made $292,069 in fiscal year 2024, according to city records.

According to a source familiar with her role, the NYPD’s top earner, a lieutenant special assignment, earned an impressive six-figure income while performing administrative tasks such as personnel in Maddrey’s office.

This revelation enraged NYPD officers and employees and risked their lives on the streets.

“What administrative work requires you to be there 115 to 120 hours a month to put in that kind of money?” A Bronx cop, who had been on the job for 20 years, vented his anger at The Post.

“It’s ridiculous for a guy who’s never been on the streets,” he said. “He has not been arrested, he is not even in a position to deal with prisoners or courts.”

Records show Epps, 51, worked about 1,627 hours of overtime in addition to his regular shifts — or an average of about 74 hours per week.

“Is any detective on the street making this kind of money? What about commanding captains or inspectors? Another veteran policeman with more than 25 years of service started barking.

“They’re not making that kind of money.”

A three-time cancer survivor, Epps’ total pay last fiscal year was less than the total compensation of ex-NYPD Police Commissioner Edward Caban, who earned a total of $288,332 in fiscal year 2024, records show.

Other NYPD officers who topped the NYPD payroll last year included 13-year stationary engineer Christopher Milevoi, who earned $389,192.65 on top of the $200,859 in overtime pay, and Lieutenant John P. Brennan, 26 years. Department of Veterinarians who did the banking. $378,437.62, with $168,132.38 in overtime.

A total of 392 NYPD employees earned at least $100,000 in overtime last fiscal year, records show.

At heated City Council budget hearings in May, top NYPD officials blamed at least $168 million in unplanned overtime pay for policing anti-Israel protests and migrant shelters.

“Employees will always get overtime because the alternative is to have a lot of employees,” said Ken Girardin, research director at the conservative watchdog Empire Center for Public Policy.

“But public employees, especially in a large operation like the NYPD, should not be getting $100,000 in overtime. “It shows that something is fundamentally broken.”

Epps justified her heavy overtime hours and earnings with the fact that she serves “more than one role” in the department, but referred to the NYPD’s Office of Public Information for clarity on her responsibilities.

“I’m just a really good woman, doing positive things,” she said.

The NYPD did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
