Earlier this week, ahead of the RNC’s official start in Milwaukee, Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce his pick for VP: Ohio Senator JD Vance.
Vance, 39, is fairly new to the US political scene, but before he entered politics, he was better known as an author, among other things. In 2016, Vance published a memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” that explained the struggle of rural Americans through Vance’s own family history.
Raised primarily by his grandparents, who escaped poverty to build a middle-class life for their family, Vance would go on to serve in the Marine Corps, and graduate from Ohio State and Yale Law School, but as the book outlines, members of the family could not escape cycles of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma that are so prevalent in working-class middle America.
Shortly after the book was published in 2016, The Post’s Kyle Smith wrote, “Though “Hillbilly Elegy” is about people, not politics, it is an eye-opening field guide to an unruly and hard-to-understand group, many of them born and bred Democrats.”
Since Vance was announced to be the GOP’s VP pick in the upcoming election, “Hillbilly Elegy” shot up in Amazon’s book charts: the paperback sits in the #1 spot while the hardcover is close behind in #2; over 100,000 copies have been sold on Amazon alone in the past month.
