“A Very Royal Scandal,” though it doesn’t share its name with any of the shows that came before it, is technically the third season of an anthology series of historical dramas that dramatize true events from British political and royal history. All three series were made by the same production company and are looped together as a three-season anthology on Prime Video.
In the first season, “A very English scandalReleased on Prime Video in 2018. This three-part miniseries is based on the Thorpe case – when politician Jeremy Thorpe was prosecuted for conspiracy to murder after his gay lover threatened his career by revealing their affair. Hugh Grant plays Thorpe, while Ben Whishaw plays his lover Norman Joseph. The series also stars Alex Jennings, who returns to the anthology series in a different role in “A Very Royal Scandal”.
A follow-up series, “A very British scandalwas released in 2021. It stars Claire Foy and Paul Bettany as Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, and Ian Campbell, Duke of Argyll, respectively, and follows the highly publicized divorce proceedings between the two in 1963.
