Iconic DJ and Ultra Sonic founder Mallorca Lee dead at 51 after cancer battle

Scottish DJ Mallorca Lee, who founded the hit 90s dance band Ultra Sonic, has died at 51 after a short cancer battle.

Lee only revealed a month ago that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, saying at the time he might only have “a matter of months left”.

His Ultra Sonic bandmate, DJ Kid, took to Instagram on Monday to announce that he had died.

“It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the sad passing on Sunday afternoon of legendary Scottish DJ, producer and long-time friend Mallorca Lee, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer just four weeks ago,” he wrote.

“He was 51.

“During this incredibly upsetting time, my deepest sympathy goes to Maria, Mallorca’s wife, his children Angel and Oceano, and his extended family and friends.

“You will be deeply missed, brother, but your energy and legacy will live on.”

Ultra Sonic released three albums in the 1990s — Tekno Junkies (1994), Global Tekno (1995) and The Hour of Chaos (1997).

They released two more albums post-1990s, Annihilating Rhythms (2005) and Hardcore Will Never Die (2020).

The band had big dancefloor hits with 1-2-3-4/Tic-Tok in 1995 and Do You Believe In Love the following year.

Other well-known songs included Acid Circus, Obsession, Make That Move and Party Non-Stop.

News of Lee’s death prompted an outpouring of sadness from the band’s fans.

“Heartbreaking,” one fan wrote.

“Legend and top man, he will be sorely missed.”

“What a sad loss,” wrote another.

“I met him at Southern Exposure in South Wales in the 90’s.

“Nice bloke.

“So, so, sad,” added another.

Close friend, Scottish radio DJ George Bowie, paid tribute to Lee on Instagram, saying he was “broken” by the news.

“Absolutely devastated by the news of Mall’s passing,” he wrote.

“We had so many good times at gigs all over the country over the past 30 years.

“Should have been preparing for the Festivals we had lined up this summer.

“A true legend and pioneer of dance music in Scotland taken way too soon.

“All our thoughts are with his family right now. Heartbreaking, truly heartbreaking.💔”

As recently as January 14, Lee had posted a picture with his family — wife Maria and their two kids Angel and Oceano — on Instagram, writing: “Hug the ones closest to you and tell them just how much they mean and how much you love them.”

It was to be his final post on social media.

Fans flocked to leave comments on the post expressing their sadness at his death.

“Absolutely hands down the best live act I have ever seen,” one fan wrote.

“Thanks for the memories, mate.

“Absolute champion.”

“RIP friend. Forever in my raver heart,” said another.

“Gutted to hear we have lost one of the hardcore greats ❤️,” wrote a third.

While not declaring what type of cancer he had, Lee had broken the news to his fans online a month ago, saying he was still having trouble processing the news.

“I’ve been diagnosed with terminal cancer, the doctor said it could be a matter of months,” he wrote.

“I apologise for not telling all of my family and friends individually, it just breaks my heart a thousand times and I don’t have the strength to go through it all over and over again.

“I love you all, the last 10 years have been the best of them all, it really has been wonderful.

“Forgive me if I don’t answer your calls and messages, I’m still processing, even this post feels like someone else is writing it …

“Love, that’s all we ever really have, our one true currency, so tell the ones around you what they mean to you, every day.

“LOVE LOVE LOVE, Mall.”
