As per government guidelinesAnzac biscuits “should not vary too much from the generally accepted recipe and shape, and should be referred to as Anzac biscuits or Anzac slices, not Anzac cookies”.

Abuse of these guidelines can result in financial penalties or imprisonment of up to 12 months if found guilty under the Protection of the Word “Anzac” Act 1920.
Rules don’t just dictate desserts.
Any official or corporate use of the word “Anzac” requires the direct prior approval of the Minister for Veterans and Defense Personnel unless it is used in direct connection with or on 25 April.
The reception, hosted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the Parliament House Great Hall, was attended by federal and state members of parliament, distinguished Australians and representatives of the King’s charity.
The “Anzac Cookie” joins a long list of native dishes and ingredients on the menu, which appears to be designed to give the royals a taste of Australia on their visit.
But the non-Australian name given to the OT sweet treat was immediately flagged.
“Excuse me, what’s an Anzac ‘cookie’?” one person asked while sharing an image of the menu x On Monday.
