An illegal immigrant was deported back to Honduras before he could face murder charges in a drunken car crash in Florida that killed three people — and prosecutors now want him to face trial .
Erwin Rommel Recinos Zuniga, 28, was allegedly driving a red Kia Forte going more than 125 mph at 3 a.m. in February 2022 when he crashed the car into a light pole in Miami.
Of the five people in the car, two were ejected, and three died, WTVJ-TV News reported,
Zuniga was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and other charges – but not yet prosecuted because he was inexplicably allowed to remain under house arrest and deported back to Honduras on September 6. Was given. Informed.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the office is now “efforting to extradite Mr. Zuniga from Honduras to face trial.”
This mistake spread anger among the families of the victims.
“They say they’re still investigating,” Miriam Castillo, sister of crash victim Paola Sabillon, told WTVJ this week. “Literally that’s all. That’s all they say. “They haven’t given us even an iota of hope.”
Meanwhile, an attorney for Miami-Dade Corrections told the outlet that the department’s policies and procedures have been updated to “prevent this from happening again.”
The state attorney’s office said Thursday it would not comment on the case out of fear it could interfere with efforts to bring Zuniga to justice.
