A former US flight attendant has exposed one passenger request and why most cabin crew members would reject it.
Kat Kamlani, who worked as a flight attendant for six years, took to TikTok. shared a video On the social media platform – where he has around 1 million followers.
Speaking about overhead locker compartments, Kamlani said that often passengers will ask flight attendants to pick up their bags and place them in the right way.
However, actually doing this is not part of their job description.
“Fun fact… everyone thinks it’s the flight attendant’s job to pick up your luggage and put it in the compartment, but it’s not,” he said.
“Our airline, and many other airlines, tell you not to do it because it causes a lot of injuries. And you’re not even covered.”
While flight attendants can offer assistance, lifting a heavy bag on behalf of a passenger can cause injury and, in the US, may not be covered by insurance.
Kamlani said there is a hint that will almost always help in placing your luggage correctly within the overhead cabin.
“Most airlines have these little cards that tell you how to put your luggage… so it will either be vertical or horizontal,” he said, if you can’t lift the bag above your head. If you are – then you should not expect a flight attendant to do this.
Thousands of commenters immediately responded to the advice, with some saying they are always there to help when needed.
“I just ask a guy to do it? What else are they for,” one joked.
“I’m a flight attendant and no we won’t help at all because he’s still lifting/holding half of the bag which can hurt your back,” said another.
“Your flight attendant will not assist you. This goes against many policies now,” chimed in a third.
