Pilot Project Kickstarts HEMS Rollout

The ministry initiated a pilot project for helicopter air ambulances by selecting an operator to provide services from AIIMS Rishikesh.

A fully-equipped helicopter with an operational EMS kit will be able to transport patients up to 100 nautical miles. AIIMS Rishikesh will provide medical oversight.

The project intends to serve as a model for nationwide HEMS expansion, with states like Odisha and Madhya Pradesh already expressing interest.

MP Also Launches Comprehensive Air Ambulance Service

In parallel, Madhya Pradesh launched emergency air ambulance services equipped to cover all districts.

The state government’s system includes both a rotary-wing helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft operating day and night. Patients can be airlifted to major hospitals in other states.

The service leverages innovative remote monitoring infrastructure enabling real-time evaluation during patient transfers. Leading operator Pawan Hans provides the helicopter.
