Speaking with Squid Game creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk hollywood reporter Told how the idea of making such a show came to his mind. He told how his financial troubles became the reason for the idea of this show. He explained in detail-
“So in 2008, I had a script that I had written that I was trying to get investment on, but it didn’t work out and it didn’t get made into a movie. It put me in a really tough financial situation – I was broke. So I spent a lot of time reading, reading, in comic book cafes. And I read a lot of comic books revolving around surviving death games – manga like Liar Game, Kaiji, and Battle Royale.” – Hwang Dong-hyuk
Hwang further said that these stories where people in debt willingly put themselves in life-or-death situations for a chance to pay off their debts became of great interest to him. He also admitted that if he gets a chance to participate in such an event again, he would happily do so.
“And well, I read some stories about these indebted people entering this life and death game, and it became really intense for me because I was struggling financially myself. I was even thinking that if such a game existed, I would love to join it, so that I could earn a lot of cash and get out of this terrible situation.” – Hwang Dong-hyuk
There was also an interview with Hwang Dong-hyuk DiversityWhile he admitted that Japanese animation and comics were a major inspiration for Squid Games, the games featured in them were a bit complex for him, therefore, he chose what he was comfortable with i.e. children’s games that he was familiar with.
“I freely admit that I have drawn a lot of inspiration from Japanese comics and animation over the years. When I started out, I was financially strapped myself and spent a lot of time reading comics, including battle royale and liar games, in cafes, wondering how I would feel if I participated in games myself. But I found games too complex and I focused on using children’s games for my work.
Now all that remains is to wait squid game season 2 To come out and this time, we will get to see some new games in the show.
