Isak Andik, founder and owner of fashion empire Mango, died in a mountain accident on Saturday, police said. He was 71 years old.
The businessman slipped and fell more than 100 meters down a cliff while hiking with relatives in the Montserrat caves near Barcelona, a police spokesman said.
“His passing leaves a huge void but we all, in some way or the other, are testament to his legacy and his achievements. It’s up to us … to ensure that Mango remains the project that Isaac was ambitious for and proud of,” Mango CEO Tony Ruiz said in a statement.
Born in Istanbul, Andic moved to the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia with his family in the 1960s and founded Mango in 1984. According to Forbes, his net worth was $4.5 billion. He was non-executive chairman of the company when he died.
He was seen as a rival to Amancio Ortega, owner of Inditex, the world’s largest fast-fashion retailer.
Mango had a turnover of 3.1 billion euros in 2023, 33% of its turnover was online and it had a presence in more than 120 markets.
