Jay Shah elected as the next ICC Chairman — Here’s all you need to know about his education, career, net worth, income sources and more


Jay Shah, who currently serves as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has been elected as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He will succeed Greg Barclay and assume his new duties on December 1, 2024. Notably, Shah was the sole nominee for the ICC chairmanship.

In an official statement shared by ICC, Shah expressed his gratitude for being nominated as the ICC chair and shared the goals he aims to achieve during his tenure. “As I step into this pivotal role, I am resolutely committed to meeting your high expectations and dedicating myself to the beautiful game of cricket,” he said. Furthermore, he added, “While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game. We must see to it that cricketers are driven to longer format and our efforts will be channelised towards this goal.

Sharing his views on cricket being included in the upcoming LA 2028 Olympics, Shah said, “While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways.

Early life and education

Jay Shah was born to Sonal and Amit Shah on September 22, 1988. After schooling in Gujarat, he pursued his B.Tech degree from a private university (Nirma University) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He is married to Rishita Patel, and the couple has two daughters.

Career

Shah began his journey in cricket by taking up an administrative role in the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he was appointed Executive Board Member in 2009. In 2013, he was appointed as the Joint Secretary of the Gujarat board, while his father (Amit Shah) served as the president of GCA.

Meteoric rise in Indian Cricket

After playing a pivotal role in overseeing the construction of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during his tenure at the GCA, Jay Shah joined the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) finance and marketing committees in 2015. A few years later (in 2019), he was elected the youngest BCCI secretary. In his tenure, the Indian Premier League (IPL) emerged as one of the world’s most-valued leagues after the tournament’s rights were sold for Rs 48 390 crore.

Net worth

According to Times Now and publicly available data, Jay Shah has an estimated net worth of Rs 124 crore. In addition to his earnings from cricket, Shah earns a substantial amount from various businesses. According to the same Times Now report, he is a director at Temple Enterprise and owns majority shares (60% stake) in Kusum Finserve.
