A new animated series, Gentry Chow vs. the Underworld, starring beef Ali Wong as the title character will premiere on Netflix in December 2024.
gentry chow vs underworld is an upcoming Netflix Original animated series created by Echo Wu and animated by Gotham Group. Wu is also the showrunner, director, and co-writer of the series, which also includes James Hamilton and Ryan Harrer.
The series’ executive producers are Aaron Eli Collite, Antonio Canobbio, Matthew Mahoney, Ben Kalina, Chris Prynosky, Shannon Prynosky, and Ali Wong.
Producer Echo Wu had There’s a lot to say to Netflix About the series:
“Sometimes finding your self-identity is coming face to face with your own demons,” Wu tells Tudum. That feeling was the north star of the writers’ room when they were working on the series. “There are different layers to what this means. (This) rings absolutely true in Gentry. (She’s) trying to figure out what these powers mean to her. Are they part of it? Are they cursing him? You’ll see this character trying to figure out who he is.
It’s not just the show’s themes that are rooted in reality, but the animation itself strives to immerse viewers in a world that’s pretty much like ours – you know, aside from ghosts and mythical creatures. “I wanted the show to feel super grounded,” says Wu. “I think it’s refreshing in animation when you have a series that isn’t just about this magical realm. I wanted it to feel real and the characters to be in our world.”
Wu’s commitment to authentically portraying this time in a young woman’s life also extended to how the show approached Gentry’s highly coveted powers. “If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would take it very well. I think she would really hide it. She thinks that having powers at a time in your life when you’re trying to fit in and be cool is social suicide. It was an interesting dynamic to play with.”

Bowen Yang plays Ed, Gentry’s assistant. Yang played The Dragon King in The Monkey King for Netflix and voiced Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. She recently starred in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, where she played Puffin.
