Jersey’s new drone command center capable of tracking airplanes



Just call it Operation Drone Home.

New Jersey authorities are looking for clues mysterious drone The skies over the Garden State have been watching for about a month now — and the Post got a look inside their new beach headquarters.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office’s drone command center, located on Vision Beach in Seaside Heights, has three giant TV screens so deputies can track aerial traffic, Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardi said.

“Nobody has actually seen (the drone) take off or land,” Mastronardi said.

“Think about that. How come no one saw them take off or land?”

With the command center, “when we get a complaint (about a drone), we can see if there are any aircraft above it,” he told The Post.

However, deputies are still unable to monitor drones with the technology, let alone airplanes.

But it helps investigators “rule out” possible drone sightings, the sheriff explained.

The drone command post has been operational for more than a week.

“It provides shelter,” Mastronardi said.

“The sheriff can sit here and have his meal. “We have cameras monitoring the coast.”

They have not yet captured the video of any mysterious drone.

“An officer reported Sunday night, I think it was just before 8 p.m., he saw 50 drones coming from the ocean,” Mastronardi said.

“He took some pictures, so we’ve got some special cameras out now to take some pictures of these objects.”

Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) held a news conference Saturday at Seaside Heights beach and said he was drafting new legislation that would give police precincts the authority to shoot down drones.

Authorities asked residents not to shoot at drones, as footage emerged on social media overnight showing people firing tracer bullets at an aircraft.
