Since then, the star has been recuperating at home with his family.
Now, he has had his PICC line removed – a thin tube inserted into a vein in the arm to deliver medications and treatments directly to the large veins near the heart – meaning he can return to some degree of normality.
Barnes said he has been living with a PICC line in his arm for the past six weeks.
“This means I can be discharged from hospital and continue the majority of my recovery at home,” he said on Instagram on Friday.
“It has been restrictive and liberating at the same time.
“This phase of my recovery is now complete and with the help of (the doctors), nurses, physiotherapists, family, friends, you guys and Mary Jane, everything is on track.”
Posing in front of a calendar with Cold Chisel dates, Barnes said rehearsing with the band again this week has “made everything better”.
“I can drive again,” he said.
“Ah! Freedom.”
The Working Class Man singer first spoke about needing surgery on August 3, when he felt “pain” in his hip in the morning.
“By late last night the pain had become unbearable so I went to the hospital,” he said at the time.
“The doctors have recommended a corrective medical procedure as soon as possible followed by some physiotherapy to resolve the problem.
“These doctors don’t give a shit!”
Barnes said he is expected to make a full recovery in six weeks.
He added, “However, as a result of this unexpected surgery, my solo shows in August and September will be affected.”
“As you know, I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but I will never compromise on the quality of my work.
“I apologize for the inconvenience this causes everyone – I hate moving shows! – but thank you for understanding.”
Before the surprise surgery, Barnes had appeared to be back in his best health — posting photos and videos of regular exercise — until undergoing open-heart surgery in 2023, when, in December, he revealed the bacterial infection he was fighting had spread to his heart.
“Despite everyone's best efforts, the bacterial infection I have been battling for the last two weeks has now spread to my heart,” Barnes said at the time.
“It has infected a healthy valve that was replaced a few years ago due to a birth defect, so I will be having open-heart surgery in the next few hours to remove the infection and put in a clean valve.
“Obviously this will take me out of action for a while.
“I know a lot of other people are dealing with much worse circumstances, but it still feels extremely depressing.”
