Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole was announced earlier this year by Netflix Nordic, confirming that Tobias Santelmann, Joel Kinnaman and Pia Tjelta are set to star. The new series will be an adaptation of Norwegian author Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole crime novel series, which began in 1997 and has 17 books as of 2023. The story revolves around Harry Hole, a Norse detective who is very effective at his job, yet very introverted.
The series is created by Jo Nesbo himself and will also be the screenwriter. Oystein Karlsen will direct it. It is being produced by the production company Working Title and will be shot in Oslo.
What is its plot? Harry Hole,
The first season of the Netflix series will be based on the 2003 novel Devil's Star in which Hole investigates a series of serial murders and suspects a fellow policeman of criminal activity. Here is the official logline for the season:
The first season sees Harry come face to face with his old enemy and corrupt detective Tom Waller. Harry is a brilliant but tormented homicide detective who struggles with his own demons. As the two navigate the blurred moral lines of the criminal justice system, Harry must do everything he can to catch a serial killer and bring Waller to justice before it's too late.
Author Jo Nesbo commented in a press release,
“I think all readers of the book series have their own vision of Harry Hollow, and they should be allowed to keep it. We will create a Harry that will be based not only on the books but on the actor Tobias Santelmann and everyone involved in the project – both in front of and behind the camera. For me, storytelling is not about giving people what they think they want, but what they didn't know they wanted. We will try to create something new, exciting and surprising in relation to the book version of Harry.”
Tobias Santelmann also shared his statement:
“I'm so grateful for the trust that's been shown in me to play Harry Hollow. I'm well aware that there's a huge fan base around the world and that millions of readers love the character. For me, it's about creating a Harry that people can recognise and be surprised by. I can't wait for shooting to begin. It's going to be a real pleasure working with everyone.”
Previously, Harry Hole was portrayed by Michael Fassbender in the 2017 film SnowmanDirected by Tomas Alfredson. The film did not do very well at the box office or among critics, only receiving a %7 rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and never received a sequel.
