Robert Smith and his band of non-happy individuals are back in their unique mop mode “alone,” His first new song in 16 years, which was released on Thursday.
And even after such a long wait, the single takes about seven minutes to make its sweet – or should he, sad – reveal.
In fact, as the group's absorbing atmosphere – shades of their 1989 classic LP “Disintegration” – Creating a melancholy atmosphere, Smith takes three minutes and 22 seconds to sing a single word.
But in the end, he comes through with his tortured voice: “It's the end of every song we sing/
The fire burns to ashes and the stars dim with tears/Cold and frightened, ghosts of what we've done/We fry our nothingness with bitter crumbs.”
Inspired by Ernest Dowson's poem “Drags”, “Alone” is an ode to the love dwindling from our lives, crafted for your sadness after your next breakup.
I mean, did you think that Smith — even though he's been married to the same woman, Mary Poole, since 1988 — would suddenly be happy at age 65?
It's comforting to know that some things – and some alt-rock icons – don't change.
Accurately described in the song as a “broken-voiced lament”, “Alone” is the first single and opening track from “Songs of a Lost World” – the Cure's first studio album since 2008's “4:13 Dream”. – Which will be released on 1 November.
The LP was also the name of the band's 2022-2023 tour, which served as a victory lap of sorts following their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. The Cure performed “Alone” during the tour before releasing the song. Finally, they will be debuting their upcoming album.
“This is the track that opened the record; As soon as we recorded that piece of music, I knew that was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus, Smith said in a press release announcing the new single.
“I'd been struggling for some time to find the right opening line for the right song, working with the simple idea of 'being alone', always with this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I already knew. That was what the opening line should have been.”
“Alone” follows Cure keyboardist Roger O'Donnell Revealed earlier this month Last year he was diagnosed with “a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma”. But in his Instagram post he wrote that “I am fine and the prognosis is wonderful.”
In recent weeks, the Cure had been teasing the release of “Songs of a Lost World” with postcards and puzzles before announcing the LP's release date.
In 2019, Smith told the Los Angeles Times He blamed himself for the album's lengthy duration.
He said of the new tracks, “I keep going back and recreating them, which is silly.” “At some point, I have to say that's enough.
He added, “It's on the darkest side of the spectrum.” “I recently lost my mother, my father and my brother, and obviously it affected me.”
But, Smith added, “It's not consistently devastating and depressing.”
