Vice President Kamala Harris met with her top potential running mates Sunday in preparation for announcing her final choice for VP before Tuesday evening.
Harris, 59, had in-person meetings at the Naval Observatory with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, according to multiple reports. She may have met with additional candidates virtually.
The vice president will make her decision public by Tuesday evening, when she is expected to appear with her VP in Philadelphia on the first stop of her multi-state swing.
Harris has been ruminating on her decision for days. The law firm Covington & Burling finished up its vetting process on her candidates on Thursday.
The firm had vetted a slate of candidates in less than two weeks since President Biden dropped his presidential bid, including Shapiro, Kelly, Walz, as well as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Shapiro, Kelly and Walz had all canceled events to meet with Harris over the weekend.
It’s unclear how Harris will announce her No. 2 — if it will be at the Pennsylvania rally or in a virtual format like video or text message, as reported by USA Today.
“Kamala Harris is picking her running mate any day now! This moment is historic, and as one of our campaign’s most faithful supporters, we want you to play a special part in it,” the campaign said in a registration sheet to receive the announcement by text message, per the outlet. “Add your name to be among the first to learn about Kamala’s VP pick when we break the news.”
Harris will likely consider the candidates’ personality, record and electability in her decision. Shapiro and Kelly are both from key battleground states.
The Democratic National Committee said Friday that Harris had already received enough delegate support to become the Democratic nominee. The final delegate vote in the virtual roll call is due Monday at 6 pm ET.
Harris’ VP choice will then likely be approved by the DNC chair, according to the DNC rules.
Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi stressed the importance of Harris’ choice on Monday.
“It’s a difficult decision because they are all so great,” she told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America.”
“It is the most important decision for her to make. Not just about who can help win, but who can help serve and lead and whose confidence she trusts,” Pelosi added.
