Vice President Kamala Harris While addressing the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation on Saturday night, his tone once again changed, raising eyebrows.
Harris, 59, briefly changed the tone of her voice at the start of her speech at a gala ceremony in Washington DC where President Biden, 81, was being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Salutations to all my nine divine brothers and sisters…” Harris said with a laugh. – A reference to major fraternities and sororities at historically black colleges and universities.
(Harris is herself an alumna, and was a sister in Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard University.)
She then spoke in her traditional style for most of her speech at the Phoenix Awards dinner – except for a few moments when she got excited.
Critics immediately attacked Harris' accent change. Critics have accused Harris of trying to please people by changing her accent when speaking in different areas – particularly at events with a majority of black audiences.
“Kamala Harris debuts her new accent at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 2024 Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C.,” Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, wrote on X.
“Kamala has introduced her new tone at various times throughout the campaign.”
“Kamala says in her fake accent 'Namaste to all my divine 9 brothers and sisters' and then laughs out loud,” the Trump campaign war room wrote.
“Kamala Harris is speaking before the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, so of course she's suddenly developed a mysterious accent…” Conservative pundit Benny Johnson posted on X.
“Last night, Kamala Harris showed off a new accent at the Black Caucus dinner. Despite spending childhoods in Berkeley, California and Montreal, Canada, Kamala speaks with a Detroit accent, a Southern accent, a French accent and more…” Conservative influencer Steve Guest wrote on X in conjunction with Harris' various appearances.
“Kamala Harris can be whatever you want her to be, depending on the audience she's speaking to. She never talks very intelligibly, but I give her credit for being able to change her accent for so many listeners!” a user named George wrote on X.
Earlier this month, netizens accused Harris of using a “fake accent” speaking to members Of a teachers union in Michigan.
In July, Harris said that Speak with a Southern accent during a rally in Atlanta. In 2021, she apparently copied one French pronunciation,
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre exploded earlier this month over a question about Harris' alleged accent.
When asked by a Fox News reporter, Jean-Pierre responded, “I don't even want to ask any questions about that… it sounds ridiculous.”
