Katy Perry’s comeback has not gone as she hoped it would. In fact, so far, it’s been somewhat disastrous, but the singer is not dissuaded. She’s pushed forward and released more new music, hoping she’ll score the hit she’s been looking for.
Late in the day on Thursday (August 8), Perry dropped a new single. “Lifetimes” arrived shortly before the new tracking week began, but Americans began consuming the tune in large numbers on Friday (August 9), hours after it arrived.
At the time of writing, “Lifetimes” has climbed into the top 10 on the U.S. iTunes chart. The dance-pop single currently sits at No. 9 on the list of the bestselling tunes in the country on what is often considered one of the most important platforms for purchases in the music industry.
“Lifetimes” is the only new entrant inside the highest tier on the tally. The rest of the spaces within the top 10 are claimed by holdovers, either from the past frame or two (such as MGK and Jelly Roll’s “Lonely Road”) or weeks, or even months, prior (Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song [Tipsy]” still rules).
Perry’s new single serves as the second official cut from her forthcoming new album 143. The project is expected to arrive in September, and while it was certainly exciting news that one of the world’s biggest pop stars had a new collection to share with the public, so far, the reception has not been warm.
On July 11, Perry dropped “Woman’s World,” the first taste of 143. The highly-anticipated electronic dance tune was immediately met with skepticism, both because of its dated sound and due to the fact that Dr. Luke, the man Kesha accused of sexual assault, is a producer and writer on what was pitched as a female empowerment anthem. The song received largely negative reviews, and it severely underperformed on the charts.
“Lifetimes” is just getting started, but in the first few hours of its release, things seem to be going well. The same could have been said for “Woman’s World,” though, and it will likely become clear in the coming days–or perhaps even hours–if this single will help her make up for a lackluster previous launch.
