“Key & Peele” has been on the air for five seasons, but its stars rarely see each other anymore.
“We don't see each other that often anymore,” Keegan-Michael Key revealed. People in a new interview. “Which to me is a tragedy.”
Key and Jordan Peele were roommates before becoming creative partners.
“Your lives start to evolve and move in different directions,” Keegan-Michael told the outlet.
Key and his wife, Ally Key, live in New York City. Peele lives in Los Angeles with his wife and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alum Chelsea Peretti.
The pair first met when they trained together at Chicago's Second City and appeared on Fox's MAD TV in 2004. Their sketch comedy “Key & Peele” eventually reached Comedy Central and ran for five seasons from 2012 to 2015.
The series earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2016.
“When we were on camera, it was alchemy. It was like, 'Why is this working?'” Key told People. “In the early days of our time together I was playing more of the Joker and doing more physical comedy, and then I found myself playing more straight roles and preparing Jordan to play the Joker.”
Since then, the two have taken different paths in the industry.
“I think our evolution is connected to our desires,” Key explained. “His desire was to start exploring the horror genre, and my desire was to do more dramatic work as I had trained in school.”
Although both have “moved on to another stage”, Key has primarily stayed in front of the camera with roles in “Friends From College”, “IF”, “Schmigadoon” and “Wonka”, Peele wrote and directed “Get Out”, “Us” and “Knope”.
Although they don’t see each other often, the actors have been working together since “Key & Peele.” They starred together in 2016’s “Keanu,” both voiced characters in 2019’s “Toy Story 4” and appear in 2022’s “Wendell & Wild.”
