Keith Urban admits he was willing ‘to do anything’ to kickstart career

In 2001, Keith Urban was willing to “do anything” to further his career, including posing for Playgirl.

On a recent episode of SiriusXM's “Really! with Rob Lowe,” Urban explained that someone from his record company pitched him the idea two decades ago and he decided to go with it.

“It was a guy from my record company who said, 'Hey, you know, we can do this article in Playgirl, and they'll make a big, long, cool piece on the record.' And I said, 'Awesome,' and then we'll go for a photo shoot too,” Urban told Lowe. “I was like, 'Oh, okay.' Luckily, I play guitar, not harmonica.”

“That was accidental,” Lowe replied. “So, by the time of the photo shoot you at least knew what you were…”

“Yes. Yes. Oh my god. Yes. Obviously I'm willing to do anything to get ahead,” Urban called out.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Urban and Lowe talked about the country music star's famous marriage to Nicole Kidman. Urban admitted that although a lot of his songs are about his wife, not all of them are.

“I always think of someone who has a famous partner or who writes about relationships. Have you ever, is it ever a thing where you say, 'Oh, it's about Nicole.' do you know what I mean? Have you ever had that?” Lowe asked.

“I mean, has it ever become an issue where people are like, 'If you write something, you write a character where you know, I don't know, things aren't going well.' Then you'll say, 'People will think it's about me and Nicole.' “Do you ever, does that ever enter your consciousness?”

“Oh yes. Yes. People think everything I write is about that, and of course, you know, a lot of things are and a lot of things aren't,” Urban responded. I mean, you know, I've lived a life. I've had other experiences, too, and it's not necessarily always an individual experience.

“It could be observational. You know, I recorded this song called 'Brown Eyed Baby' and I had a lot of people say, 'Well, you can't sing about a brown eyed girl. I mean, she has blue eyes. She must have been very angry,' and I think, 'Not really.'

“No. It's just a song. It's just a song,” Urban insisted. “People think like that, I don't know. So, it's never like that, because I don't think Dolly Parton actually Worked from 9 to 5.
