It might be time for another trip to the mall.
Kevin Smith tells The Post exclusively that he plans to make a sequel to his 1995 comedy “Mallrats.”
The 54-year-old director revealed that he had spoken to one of the film’s stars, Shannen Doherty, about a possible sequel before she died of cancer at the age of 53 in July.
“When we lost Shannon, that was a tough loss, man,” Smith told The Post while promoting his new upcoming film. “4:30 movie.”
“They’re all tough losses, but she’s an amazing person,” he said of the “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum. “At the time I thought, ‘Well, this is for mallrats.’ Especially because, like, my last conversation with him was about ‘Mallrats,’ about us going to Universal and making it happen.’
Smith said that Doherty once told her on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast that she would “play the cancer card” to get the film made.
“So it’s very bittersweet. I thought it was dead,” Smith said of the potential sequel. “But then recently conversations started happening. It is very early, but there may be some hope.”
Smith said, “And if that’s the case, it will be back for the 30th anniversary.” “It’s the 30th Anniversary of ‘Clerks’, 2025 is 30 Years of ‘Mallrats'”.
The “Dogma” director continued, “So to be able to go back and tell a multi-generational story like the Mallrats and their kids, would be an absolute dream come true, because that’s where I am now. Multi-generational. Like, I And (Jason) is older. We’ve got our kids. And so hopefully we can do it.”
“Mallrats” follows two best friends (played by Jeremy London and Jason Lee) as they spend a day at the mall after breakups with their respective girlfriends.
Doherty, Mewes, Ben Affleck, Michael Rooker, Claire Forlani and Priscilla Barnes also star in the film.
Six months before Doherty’s death, Smith Appeared on the “Let’s Be Clear” podcast And told the actress that it was because of her fame that this feature could be made.
But Doherty said that the film’s failure (it grossed only $2 million on a $6 million budget) harmed his career.
“People really thought I was carrying the film, so it failed at the box office; It was completely on me. So there was no film career after that, which was a bit cruel,” she explained. “I really thought ‘Mallrats’ was going to get me in that gear (to make movies).”
“She’s right, man. It’s like, if it works, the film career goes here. And that actually didn’t happen. Boy, I’m sorry about that,” Smith told Doherty.
“The 4:30 Movie”, considered Smith’s most personal film to date, is set in the summer of 1986 and centers on three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays watching movies at the local cineplex. When one of the boys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated movie, all happiness is dashed as a self-important theater manager and teenage rivalry interfere with his best-laid plans.
The cast includes Lee, Austin Jajur, Nicholas Cirillo, Reed Northrup, Sienna Agudong, Justin Long, Ken Jeong, Rachel Dratch and Sam Richardson.
“The 4:30 Movie” is now available on digital.
