Kimberly Williams-Paisley has opened up about the “terrible” health crisis.
The 53-year-old “Father of the Bride” actress reveals in a new interview People Her voice disappeared in late 2022 – and she could not speak louder than a whisper for almost two years.
“I felt trapped in my own body. There was a lot of embarrassment involved. I felt invisible,” she said.
Williams-Paisley recalled that her voice problems began at an annual fundraiser for Alzheimer’s, which she organized with her sister Ashley Williams.
“I put the mic in my mouth and nothing came out,” he said. “It was horrible.”
A few months later, Williams-Paisley was at the premiere of her film “Dog Gone” in January 2023 and realized that the event was too noisy for her interview.
“I looked weak and I didn’t feel like that,” she said. “I went to the bathroom and cried, and some friends held my hand.”
Williams-Paisley detailed how much she struggled mentally with not being able to speak.
“The days when I didn’t want to do anything. Days when I was extra tired. Anxiety thoughts related to bicycling in the middle of the night. I wouldn’t say I had clinical depression, but I was sad,” she shared.
The “According to the Gym” star said she eventually went to the Vanderbilt Voice Center in early 2023 and was diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia, which means “the muscles in my neck tighten up to help my vocal cords hit each other.” Was stressed.”
Williams-Paisley spent the next year trying treatments such as antidepressants, Invisalign braces, a vegan diet, hypnosis, and seeing a psychic and astrologer, but her voice still did not return, so she isolated herself.
“I love dinner parties and being around people, but I didn’t want to go out,” she said. “I couldn’t be a part of the conversation.”
Williams-Paisley added, “There were days when I was sad and cried.” “I wondered, ‘Who am I without my voice?'”
Earlier this year, Williams-Paisley returned to Vanderbilt and doctors noticed that her left vocal cord was not connecting with the right one, causing her to lose her voice. “Once I got this diagnosis, my body could relax in a whole new way,” she said. “Shame and guilt are destroyed. “It was largely a technical issue, not something I did wrong.”
Later in August, the actress underwent a three-hour surgery and regained her voice.
Today, Williams-Paisley’s voice is “much better”.
“I still can’t shout in the street,” she said. “And at the end of a long day of conversation, I’ll sound a little more gruff than before, but I think that’s sexy. And I’ve learned that when you talk calmly, people tend to gravitate towards you, which is not bad.”
Williams-Paisley’s husband, country singer Brad Paisley, tells People how he supported his wife during her health struggle.
“I would advise her: ‘Do this vocal warm-up with me.’ I stepped into it a lot!” He said.
Williams-Paisley also said that the couple’s sons Haq, 17, and Jasper, 15, “were great cheerleaders for me. Seeing them hug me made me feel less lonely.”
