Athens, Ga. – The judge in the murder trial of Georgia nursing student Laquan Riley issued a warning to the courtroom about graphic bodycam footage being shown – prompting several people to walk away and family members to cover their eyes. Fell.
“I’m going to interrupt you,” Judge H. Patrick Haggard told prosecutor Sheila Ross as she was about to play video taken at the scene where the 22-year-old jogger’s body was found.
“I suspect what we’re going to see is the body of the victim,” Haggard said. “I’m going to offer anyone out here if you want to do that. I will pause to allow you to do so.
The judge said it would be “more difficult” to view the evidence.
Ross then confirmed that “some people have left but others are insisting on staying.”
The prosecutor said he had warned them to refrain from speaking in the courtroom while the footage was playing.
Riley’s mother and some other Riley supporters walked out of the courtroom and Riley’s stepfather covered his eyes as video played of the emotional trial.
The footage showed Sgt. Kenneth Maxwell of the University of Georgia Police Department for about 20 minutes in Athens, Ga. After searching for Riley on his way to the University campus, his body was found.
Riley – who prosecutors say was beaten and strangled by illegal Venezuelan immigrant Jose Ibarra – lay lifeless 50 feet off the trail, her shirt pulled up and her torso exposed, Maxwell testified. Was open.
“I found him! Madam, Madam. Madam. I need EMS immediately. Madam, madam, madam. She has fallen down, she is not breathing!” Maxwell can be heard saying in the video.
Maxwell then begins attempting to revive her with CPR, before saying, “I can’t find any pulse. He is tough.”
The policeman adds, “It appears as if there has been blunt force trauma to the head.”
