A photo of Ibarra’s bruised arm, taken the day after the Georgia nursing student’s death, was displayed – causing Riley’s heartbroken mother to burst into tears.
During opening statements Friday, prosecutors claimed Riley, 22, “fought for his life” against Jose Ibarra for 18 minutes before he died and that Ibarra’s DNA was found under his fingernails.
Ibarra’s injuries were shown for the second time in the courtroom during testimony from a University of Georgia policeman who went to Ibarra’s home the day after the murder and led to his arrest.
Several photos of Ibarra’s bruised arms, wrists and hands were shown for the first time Friday as prosecutors argue they are proof he is Riley’s killer.
When Sgt. Joshua Epps was at Ibarra’s house the day after the murder, saying that Ibarra had smoked a cigarette before his arrest.
Ibarra and the three roommates also talked and laughed at each other, Epps said, while Phillips shook his head at the testimony.
“He thought it was amusing how many police cars we had,” Epps testified.
Phillips cried throughout court Friday as graphic photos and videos emerged of her daughter’s body after she was brutally beaten and suffocated to death.
