“It’s with a combination of nostalgia and gratitude that we announce the closing down of Leading Edge Video, Birkdale,” the store said.
“But, don’t throw away the popcorn yet — to clear our inventory, we’re running a BIG closing down sale with nothing over 50 cents! From classics to cult favourites, there’s something for everyone.”
The store opened in 1986 renting out VHS tapes and eventually DVD and Blue Ray discs.
“It is a bit sad, streaming services have changed things for everyone,” one customer told 7NEWS.
The closure marks the end of an era as streaming services such as Amazon, Netflix and Stan change the way we consume movies and TV shows.
One customer said the shop had been a “diamond in the rough”, while others commented that they would “rather hire a movie than download it”.
“It is so wonderful to be able to talk to someone when deciding on a video.”
The store will officially close its doors on March 27 at 5pm.
