A Democratic voter in Pennsylvania insisted that “nobody got a raise” after being questioned by CBS journalist Scott Pelley about voting for President-elect Donald Trump.
Following Trump’s decisive victory and the GOP’s massive post-election lead, “60 Minutes” traveled to the swing state to reach ordinary Americans about how Democrats “misunderstand people.”
One voter, restaurant owner Rose Werkheiser, cited the rising cost of food as a major issue.
“Prices have increased, obviously because of the cost of food. And for a family of, like, four people, five people, I’ve had them come in and say, ‘Oh my God, I spent $100 with tip for breakfast? That’s madness.’ It is what it is,” Werkheiser told CBS reporter Scott Pelley.
He added, “My mother always said, ‘You have to vote Democrat. You know, they’re for poor people.”
Pelley asked, “You grew up in a Democratic household?”
“Yes,” Werkheiser replied.
“But you just voted for Donald Trump,” Pelley said.
Werkheiser then replied, “Yes.”
The economy was considered one of the top issues concerning voters before the election, but Pelley argued with Werkheiser that it had actually improved.
“Inflation has dropped by more than half, interest rates are falling, mortgage rates are falling, wages are rising. Don’t you feel that way?” Pele asked.
“I don’t feel it,” Werkheiser said. “No, I don’t feel it. I don’t feel it at all. No one I talk to has had a salary increase. But we had four years of it. I mean, four years. There was too much gas. Yes, it has declined now, but it has increased in the last four-three and a half years.
While inflation has fallen from near its record levels in 2022, prices have not declined to pre-pandemic levels.
according to a fox business analysis In September, food prices increased by approximately 22.8%, energy prices increased by approximately 42.4% and new vehicle prices increased by 19.5% under the Biden administration compared to Trump’s first term.
2024 fox news voter analysis found that the economy is the second-biggest issue among Trump voters after immigration.
Overall, the economy ranked as the top issue among voters with a plurality of 39%.
A majority of Trump voters also believed the economy was “not so good” or “bad”.
