Linkin Park’s Second Album Soars 372% In Sales

Last year, Linkin Park celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the release of their sophomore album Meteora. The band dropped a special edition of the title, which includes some special goodies and previously unreleased tunes, and it became a bestseller again.

More than a year later, Linkin Park isn’t done honoring Meteora. In July, the rockers unleashed a new vinyl edition of the project, and fans bought the set in large numbers. All those purchases help the album return to a number of Billboard charts, thanks to a massive uptick in sales.

In the past tracking week, Meteora sold just under 3,200 copies, according to Luminate. That’s enough to send Linkin Park’s bestseller back to the Top Album Sales chart, where it makes a home at No. 38 this frame. That sum is up significantly from the period before when the same title was purchased by fewer than 700 people in the U.S.

From one frame to the next, Linkin Park’s second album experienced a 372% increase in sales. That kind of performance is always noteworthy, but considering how long Meteora has been available—and taking into account the fact that many followers of the band already purchased a new copy last year—that figure becomes especially impressive.

All those vinyl purchases help Meteora blast back onto seven different Billboard charts this week. Of course, it reappears on the Vinyl Albums list, where it lands at No. 15. It’s now spent just three nonconsecutive stints somewhere on that ranking.

The title’s success on the format translates to a placement on several other tallies as well. Meteora breaks into the top 10 on the Top Alternative Albums (No. 8) and Top Hard Rock Albums (No. 4) charts this week. It performs nearly as well on both the Top Rock Albums (No. 16) and Top Rock & Alternative Albums (No. 20) rosters.

Looking at total consumption, Meteora shifted 13,500 equivalent units last week across America. That’s also up significantly from the period before, and sales played a large role when it came to inflating that number. On the Billboard 200, Linkin Park’s sophomore effort reappears at No. 74.
