Lisa Frank’s son Hunter Green says he’s growing up distinguished artist “It was not a colorful, magical time.”
Amazon in interview for MGM Studios’ new documentary “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story,” Green revealed that she has been estranged from her famous mother for years.
The 29-year-old, who is the eldest of Frank’s two sons, shared intimate details about what it was like for him growing up in the Frank family. According to Green, the relationship between father James Green and mother Lisa was strained – and he knew he was bound for divorce.
“The divorce happened when I was 10 years old. I remember, I knew my dad wasn’t coming home that night. I just knew something was wrong,” Green recalled.
“I called him, even though I knew the answer, I asked him, ‘Hey Dad, are you coming home tonight?’ I remember he said, ‘I’m not coming home tonight, buddy.'”
Green also remembers asking his father, “Can’t you wait 8 years until I turn 18?”
He further added, “It’s a long time but as a 10-year-old kid you don’t know any better. There was resentment, yes.”
Green, who grew up in Tucson, Arizona, explained that his family’s public image was very different from the reality of their lives. “Everyone knows my family runs a big business and has money,” he said. “So everyone is under the impression that your life is perfect. This is the high life. And it was not so.
Green said that even as a child he knew “there was something wrong with our family.”
“I don’t remember us ever sitting down to dinner without an argument. I don’t remember any birthday that went well. They simply did not make eye contact with each other. It was just a broken family, screaming and arguing back and forth,” Green revealed.
“It was me and my father and my mother and [younger brother] Forest. It never happened that we were one big happy family. I knew the family would be separated at an early age.
Hunter further said that he and Forrest have a very different relationship with their mother.
“My mother treated Forrest a little differently, a little softer, than I did. He treated her more like his child than me,” he claimed.
According to Green, Frank created a “facade” to make her appear to be “the best mother ever”, but in private she was far from that image.
“She’ll yell at me, she’ll yell at me,” Green said. ,[My parents] They would call me a problem child and maybe I would get in trouble, but that was because I was so nervous with everything going on at home and everything. I was not a problem child. I wasn’t a bad kid. I was in a bad environment.”
At one point, Green claims that Frank told him, “Go live with your father.”
“I felt like she wasn’t encouraging me or telling me she wanted me around,” Green shared. “He had his own struggles that he probably took out on me. He lost his parents at an early age, which may have left some traumatic experiences in his mind. But growing up in her household was not a colorful, magical time.
Frank has released a statement responding to the documentary, which appears in each episode.
“I love art and have been an artist since childhood. Lisa Frank, Inc. The result of that passion,” the statement said. “I am incredibly grateful to the amazing cast and team members who helped bring my vision to life. I am very excited about the future as the next generation takes charge. Stay tuned – the best is yet to come!”
