This prediction made the entire team go “Oh!”
The beloved animated series “The Simpsons” is notorious for featuring hundreds of thousands of jokes predicting the future. And after voicing Homer and Marge Simpson’s youngest child Lisa Simpson for 36 seasons, Yeardley Smith was surprised when a prediction came true – twice!
“Trump as president,” Smith told The Post exclusively at Vulture Fest over the weekend. “I know the story was that they were – as ‘The Simpsons’ does – like who would be the most ridiculous president ever? Whether you voted for him or not, that was the thinking.”
“We predicted this long before it happened, so I don’t think he was thinking about politics,” the actress said. He was doing ‘The Apprentice’. “That’s the one that stands out the most.”
But that doesn’t mean it was the only major program the Fox sitcom called. As Smith said, “There are killer hornets and now we even have murder hornets. Great! Listen, they just have to eliminate it because that never seems like good news.
As viewers will recall, in the 2000 episode “Bart to the Future”, a look into the future featured Lisa Simpson as the President of the United States, telling her staff, “As You know, we inherited quite a budget deficit from President Trump.” He was then told by Secretary of State Milhouse Van Houten that America was now broken.
In 2016, Trump was elected president, and in his three years in office, America was not broke, but the stock market was suffering. In fact, it experienced some of its largest single-day losses ever During the coronavirus pandemic.
Now in 2024, Trump won the election against Vice President Kamala Harris.
Along with his infamous predictions, Smith has some of his favorite relationships that have continued since he started the show in 1989 with Nancy Cartwright (Bart), Dan Castellaneta (Homer) and Julie Kavner (Marge).
“Sideshow Bob is trying to kill Bart,” she shared. “Lisa and Homer are trying to figure out how they relate to each other. That’s the relationship I love – Homer is really sweet with her. I always love the rivalry with Bart and Lisa, they do it so well.
These days, along with voicing a character that spans several decades, Smith’s podcast small town dicks Recently won Best Documentary Podcast at the Women in Podcasting Awards.
“I co-host with my now husband Detective Dan and his identical twin brothers Detective Dave and Paul Holes,” the host explained. “All the cases are told by the detectives who investigated them so you get a real first-hand account of what it was like to have all the dominoes line up perfectly to get justice.”
Smith continued, “If a domino falls, really, there are a number of reasons and events where a case goes to the wayside and it never goes to trial or whatever the case may be.”
How did he feel taking home this prestigious award?
“Honestly, when they won and my name was called I was like, ‘What?’ I was very surprised,” Smith admitted. “I realized I was woefully unprepared, with great editors and an extraordinary team. Standing on the shoulders of. I am happy to accept on our behalf.”
Celebrations were in order, so the voiceover star emailed his business partner and team and said, “‘We won!’
She teased, “The responses were like, ‘Oh, what did we win?’ I was like, ‘You guys are the worst!'”
