Two Long Island beachgoers found a human jawbone on the sand in a strange incident during a walk Monday evening, police said.
Police said the man and woman were walking on the beach at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, on the southern shore of the island, just before 5 p.m. when they spotted the bone.
Authorities said the pair brought the remains to a park attendant working at the beach, who called police.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner determined that the remains were human, but further investigation was needed to link them to a specific individual.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are also investigating the discovery.
