Subscription prices are already reaching the point of frustration for consumers, and it seems companies aren’t willing to budge any time soon. During the Warner Bros. Discovery Q3 earnings call, the company’s CFO, Gunnar Weidenfels, said the Max will ban password sharing in 2025 and with progress in the coming months.
As reported The VergeThe move will start with “a soft message” about the change, Strict action will be taken after thisIf it sounds similar, it’s the same set Password sharing rules used by Netflix And Disney+ recently. This is where these services send emails to existing customers before renegotiating their subscription.
Gunnar Weidenfels asks members who haven’t signed up, or multi-household members, “pay a little moreHe also called password sharing “a form of value addition.” Gunnar indicated that Max’s Subscription price may also increase soonThe company believes “at the pricing we have been prudent with, there is ample scope for further upside”.
Note that Max last raised its prices for the ad-free and Ultimate tiers in June this year. This isn’t the first time Max has expressed a desire to limit password-sharing, following a successful effort by Netflix. And it doesn’t look like these price hikes are going to end any time soon as people continue to pay for them. I am also guilty of this.
Max is home to some of the most beloved TV shows like Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and The Sopranos. Plus, it has a list of all Warner Bros. movies, which is why I think the company’s action on password sharing will be a successful attempt to gain more subscribers. Currently its user base is 110.5 million users, which may increase after the upcoming changes.
