The Mega Millions jackpot is approaching the billion-dollar mark as its latest drawing produced no grand prize winners.
The lottery said there were no players with tickets matching all the numbers in Tuesday night’s drawing, bringing the jackpot to an annual $825 million. As a lump sum cash payment, this amounts to $382.2 million.
If the jackpot hits someone before the end of the year, it’s poised to become Mega Millions’ fourth grand-prize win of 2024, according to the lottery.
The three jackpot wins seen by Mega Millions so far this year have occurred in mid-September, early June and late March. These were valued at $810 million, $552 million and $1.128 billion respectively.
The $1.128 billion grand prize, which was won in March and is still unclaimed, is the biggest lottery win so far this year and the only lottery to break 10-figures to date in 2024, according to Mega Millions.
Mega Millions said the current $825 million jackpot would be “the largest prize ever won in December and the seventh-largest prize in Mega Millions history” if someone matches all six numbers this month.
Drawings held since September, when the Mega Millions jackpot was most recently won, have produced a large number of lower-tier lottery winners. The lottery reports that 51 people have received windfall profits of at least $1 million, and others have received smaller amounts.
Mega Millions plans to hold its next drawing Friday evening for the $825 million grand prize. The chances of hitting a nine-figure jackpot are approximately 1 in 302.6 million.
Fellow lottery Powerball also has a running jackpot, although it is currently significantly smaller than Mega Millions.
The Powerball jackpot reached nearly $69 million ahead of Wednesday night’s drawing. Its cash value, according to that lottery, was $32.2 million.
