A Mississippi man was “buried” alive under “hot asphalt” after his truck malfunctioned and a burning sidewalk fell on top of him, according to police.
Darrell Sheriff, 41, was lifting a truck at AJ Materials in Jackson on Monday, working on a hydraulic line underneath it, when the tailgate opened and asphalt was “unloaded” onto it.
Jackson Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m. and found the sheriff “buried under hot asphalt,” according to Chief Joseph Wade. Said In a press conference.
“There were some people at the scene who tried to help him,” Wade said.
“He said he tried to fight his way through those injuries, but they were so severe that it was unlikely he would survive.”
Wade described the scene as “horrible” and “tragic”.
“It’s something you don’t want to see,” the lawmaker said.
The police department said they are conducting a thorough investigation but believe the sheriff’s death has been classified as an accident.
“It appears his dump truck has some type of malfunction,” Wade said.
The Jackson police chief said some family members present at the scene of the death recognized their loved one and were “traumatized,” describing him as “a good, hard-working family man.”
“With the holidays coming up, I’m missing this gentleman who was out here just trying to make a living,” Wade shared.
“They are really hurting, but we will be here to support them and lift them up in prayer.”
