A mother of two in Utah has started planning her funeral after learning she only had three months left to live
While in the hospital for shoulder surgery in May 2022, Erica Dyart-Carr, 33, learned she had stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma, a rare form of cancer, she revealed on GoFundMe.
The young mother began cancer treatment but suffered another blow in January when she was diagnosed with cancer Cushing’s syndrome,
What causes Cushing’s? high levels of stress hormones Cortisol in the body. Weight gain, a round face and high blood pressure are among its symptoms, and the disorder can be fatal if left untreated.
Only 40 to 70 people out of every 1 million have Cushing’s, making the syndrome extremely rare. According to the National Institutes of Health,
Deart-Carr said she met with her oncologist on September 18, who told her the treatments were not working.
“I have been given 3 months to live,” Diarte-Carr wrote on GoFundMe. “3 months to spend with my children and loved ones. 3 months to make the best of the time I have left. During these next few months I have to make sure that my children will be okay after I am gone. Now I face the hardest thing of all: planning my own funeral.
Deart-Carr said she was unable to work for months.
“I have no savings or any life insurance for this situation,” he wrote. “I’ve looked at the expenses and I need to raise about $5,000 to cover the funeral costs, plus I want to leave something for my children.”
The GoFundMe page was launched when Dyart-Carr was just 30 when she learned of her illness.
As of Saturday afternoon, it had surpassed its original $5,000 goal, with more than $840,000 from more than 29,000 donations.
The humble Dyart-Carr said the money left after her funeral will be set aside in a trust fund for her children, Jeremiah, 7, and Aaliyah, 5.
“This way, I can leave something for them and I can make sure they’ll be okay as they grow up,” she wrote.
He wrote, “My family and I thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.” He further wrote, “(My children) are my entire life, light and soul. My children are my fight and they help me move forward.”
The three will soon be traveling together, and Dyart-Carr hopes they will get a chance to spend one last Christmas together.
