If you’re a camper, you’ll know that little creature comforts from home can make a world of difference.
Whether it’s bringing your favorite pillow or your favorite brand of coffee — a touch of home can make the great outdoors all the more enjoyable.
But what happens when your creature comfort checklist starts to resemble your entire furniture and appliance inventory?
That’s the question that’s divided the internet this week after a mom shared a video of her rather extravagant camping setup.
Let’s just say there’s no billy in sight.
The four-tent set up
In the clip, which has been viewed by over four million people, mom-of-two Jodie Louise invites her followers into her family’s campsite and shows them the various rooms and luxe amenities she’s brought on the trip.
Starting with the ‘foyer,’ Jodie has placed a three-tiered shoe rack at the entrance to ensure the inside of the tents stays clean. There’s also a toilet for “desperate times in the nighttime,” a clothesline and washing basket, and an esky full of food.
Then comes the main living quarters, which consists of four tents joined together to create one massive ‘house’.
One tent is the ‘kitchen’, complete with a toaster, kettle and utensils station.
The next is a ‘living room’ with rugs, a blow-up sofa, throws and cushions, as well as a plasma TV.
“The TV is there for when the children are absolutely shattered from all the activities of camping,” the mom explained. “We can leave them in the tent and put some Netflix on while we just sit out and enjoy some Prosecco. Gives us a little bit of adult time.”
Moving towards the back of the space, Jodie shows off her bedroom, which is fitted out with a double bed and a portable wardrobe complete with drawers and ample hanging space.
Adjoining the adult’s bedroom is the kid’s room, which also has a double bed that looks extra cosy with a full sheet and doona set.
Finally, the outdoor area has a BBQ, lounge chairs, a full dining table and blow-up screens for privacy and to shield their tents from the wind.
In a subsequent clip, Jodie shows her partner vacuuming the carpets inside the tents with a full-sized Dyson.
“Why would you not vacuum while camping? You vacuum at home, it’s a proper camping carpet, why would you not want it clean?” she said. “I don’t think it’s a biggie.”
“Why even go camping?”
Many followers were left baffled by the whole set-up, with one person asking, “Why even go camping?”
“I do love your equipment, but some of these things are just a pure laugh to me…” said one commenter.
“I will never understand this style of camping,” another admitted.
“Jesus, leave the TV at home. The bloody news or whatever crap you watch will still be there when you return,” said a fourth.
“Oh my days, I could be abroad in an all-inclusive resort by the time it takes you to set this up!” a fifth noted.
“The point of camping is to get away from the house…” a different viewer claimed.
Another snarky comment read, “I honestly thought camping meant you go somewhere secluded to get in touch with nature.”
However, many also rushed to the mom’s defense. “I think people don’t understand the difference between camping and bushcraft survival camping. There’s no one way to camp,” said one fan.
“That’s my idea of camping, 😅” wrote someone else.
“If I’m camping for a week, this is how I wanna camp! Comfortable and organised. A lot of people don’t like camping because they don’t like the messiness of it. This is a game-changer,” another TikToker shared.
“No rule book”
Jodie responded to some of the backlash, saying “I didn’t realize there was a rule book to camping” and “people can camp how they want.”
“If I want to bring my washing machine and dryer and someone else wants to just bring the basics, just let them do what they want to do.
“Everyone loves to pick on other people about what they do.”
