A moped-riding mugger ripped a necklace off a 96-year-old woman’s neck and knocked her to the ground in a callous Harlem stick-up, cops said.
The thief rolled up to the nonagenarian at West 127th Street and Eighth Avenue around 5:25 p.m. May 24 and yanked off the piece of jewelry, authorities said.
The force of the pull knocked the senior to the ground, cops said.
The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition and treated for minor injuries, police said.
The mugger, who had not been caught by Tuesday, took off on a black moped.
Video released by the NYPD late Monday shows the robber sitting on the two-wheeler wearing all black, except for his white sneakers with black stripes.
The broad-daylight crime came weeks before the NYPD announced it was fighting back in the midst of an unprecedented spike in the number of scooters and mopeds used as getaway vehicles in serious felony crimes, which The Post revealed in a front-page report.
NYPD stats show that among the seven most serious crimes, scooters, mopeds and motorcycles were involved 790 times so far this year – compared to just 156 times over the same span in 2022.
Last week, cops hit the streets and seized 39 of the troublesome two-wheelers and issued summonses.
Anyone with information on the robbery of the Harlem senior is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
