India ended its 13-year wait for a World Cup trophy on June 29 by winning the T20 World Cup 2024. This victory marks India’s fourth World Cup win, adding to their previous victories in the 1983 and 2011 ODI World Cups, as well as the 2007 T20 World Cup.
The 1983 World Cup victory was a watershed moment in Indian cricket. Considered underdogs, India, led by Kapil Dev, defeated the formidable West Indies in the final to secure their first-ever World Cup trophy. However, it took 28 long years for India to win their second ODI World Cup title, which came in 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who ultimately led India to a total of three ICC trophies.

Three months after the 2011 World Cup final, Mumbai-based brokerage firm RK Global acquired MS Dhoni’s Reebok-labelled bat for £100,000 (Rs 72 lakh approx.) at an auction during MS Dhoni’s ‘East Meets West’ Charity Dinner in London, according to Asianet News.
The event was organised to raise funds for MS Dhoni’s wife’s humanitarian organisation, The Sakshi Foundation, which supports underprivileged children in India.
It was with this bat that MS Dhoni struck the World Cup-winning six over long-on, making it one of cricket’s most iconic pieces of memorabilia. MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, having amassed 17,266 runs across all formats. Some of his greatest achievements include leading India to victories in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies.
MS Dhoni captained India in 200 ODIs, securing 110 wins, and scored 10,773 ODI runs with 10 centuries and 73 fifties. He also accumulated 4,876 runs in Tests and 1,617 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of over 126. Renowned for his exceptional wicket-keeping, Dhoni took 634 catches and executed 195 stumpings in international cricket. He continues to play in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings.
