Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. At least Hulu is hoping so.
Inspired, no doubt, by mega-hit The Golden Girls, Hulu has greenlit the 20th Television comedy Mid-Century Modern from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. The multi-cam series, which is also executive produced by Ryan Murphy, stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham as, per the logline, “three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother (Linda Lavin).”
“As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done,” continues the description.
Shades of Bea Arthur in The Golden Girls, Nathan Lane stars in Mid-Century Modern as Bunny Schneiderman, a successful businessman with one foot in retirement who is forever in search of love.
Reminiscent of Betty White as Rose, Matt Bomer plays Jerry Frank, who left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was gay.
Similar to Rue McClanahan as Blanche, Nathan Lee Graham is Arthur, a “dignified, elegant fashion industry veteran who believes that life will never quite match the grace and panache that would exist if only he were in charge.”
And Linda Lavin — the “Sophia” (Estelle Getty) of the group – plays Bunny’s mother, Sybil Schneiderman, who is described as “critical, smothering and amoral.”
Lane and Bomer are also executive producers of Mid-Century Modern.
Linda Lavin, of course, is no stranger to the sitcom world. Following nine seasons (1976-85) on Alice, the actress, to-date, has appeared as a series regular in five different comedies (Room For Two, Conrad Bloom, Sean Saves the World, 9JKL and, most recently, B Positive from 2020-22). Tony Award-winner Nathan Lane was recently seen in Only Murders in the Building. Matt Bomer is known for dramas American Horror Story and White Collar, but honed his skills in comedy in a recurring role in the recent reboot of Will & Grace. And Nathan Lee Graham appeared in the one season Fox comedy LA to Vegas and, more recently, the short-lived Riverdale spin-off Katy Keane.
Of course, that “Golden” four – Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty – headlined the top-rated and multi-Emmy Award-winning The Golden Girls from 1985 to 1992. Historically, The Golden Girls is only one of four comedies where all the principal actors took home an Emmy. (The other four are All in the Family, Will & Grace and Shitt’s Creek).
The number of episodes ordered for Mid-Century Modern has not been confirmed. It is expected to launch on an undisclosed date in 2025.
